How we worked this out
  1. Start with your council’s Band D charge for the year.
  2. Multiply it by your band’s fixed share of Band D (for example Band B is 7/9 in England and Wales).
  3. Take off any discount (25% if you live alone, 50% if everyone in the home is disregarded), then split it into 10 or 12 monthly payments.

How council tax bands work

Council tax is set by your council as a Band D figure. Every other band is a fixed share of it, so if you know Band D and your band, the maths is one multiplication.

Frequently asked questions

How is council tax worked out?

Each council sets a Band D charge. Every other band pays a fixed fraction of it: in England and Wales Band A pays 6/9 and Band H pays 18/9 (double). Scotland uses its own fractions for bands E to H.

What is the average council tax in England for 2026/27?

The average Band D charge in England is £2,392 for 2026/27, including adult social care and parish precepts, up 4.9% on 2025/26. The average bill per home is £1,868 because most homes are in bands A to C.

How much is the single person discount?

25% off the bill if you are the only adult living in the home. If everyone in the home is disregarded (for example full-time students), it is 50% off. You must apply to your council for either.

Can I pay over 12 months instead of 10?

The bill is usually split into 10 monthly payments. Ask your council if you would rather spread it over 12 months, especially if you are finding it hard to pay.

How do I find my council tax band?

Search your postcode on GOV.UK for England and Wales, or on the Scottish Assessors Association website for Scotland. Bands are based on 1991 values (2003 in Wales).
