How we worked this out
  1. Add up what you’ve paid into cash, stocks and shares and Lifetime ISAs since 6 April. Take it away from the £20,000 allowance.
  2. Lifetime ISA bonus: 25% of what you’ve paid in, on up to £4,000 (so at most £1,000).
  3. Tax saved: interest on your cash ISA balance, minus the Personal Savings Allowance for your tax band, times your savings tax rate.

How the ISA maths works

Your ISA allowance resets every 6 April. Anything you pay in between then and 5 April counts, whichever ISA it goes into. Taking money out does not normally give you allowance back, though some “flexible” ISAs let you replace it in the same tax year. Check with your provider.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ISA allowance for 2026/27?

£20,000 for the tax year from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. You can split it across cash, stocks and shares, innovative finance and Lifetime ISAs.

Is the cash ISA limit changing?

Yes. From 6 April 2027, people under 65 can put at most £12,000 a year into cash ISAs. The overall £20,000 limit stays, so the rest can go into stocks and shares. If you are 65 or over, the cash limit stays at £20,000.

How does the Lifetime ISA work?

You can pay in up to £4,000 a year and the government adds 25%, up to £1,000 a year. It counts towards your £20,000. You must make your first payment before you turn 40, and you can pay in until 50.

Does a Junior ISA count towards my allowance?

No. A Junior ISA has its own limit of £9,000 for 2026/27, separate from the adult £20,000.

Do I still need an ISA with the Personal Savings Allowance?

It depends on how much interest you earn. Basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 of interest tax-free, higher-rate £500 and additional-rate nothing. Above that, an ISA keeps the interest tax-free.
