Student Loan Repayment Calculator 2026/27
Work out your monthly student loan repayment for Plan 1, 2, 4, 5 and Postgraduate Loans using the 2026/27 thresholds.
| Loan | Threshold | Rate | Per year | Per month |
|---|
How we worked this out
- Take your income before tax and subtract your plan’s yearly threshold.
- Multiply what’s left by the repayment rate (9%, or 6% for a Postgraduate Loan).
- If you have a Postgraduate Loan as well, work it out separately and add it on.

How the calculation works
The student loan maths is simple: take your income before tax, subtract your plan’s threshold, and multiply what is left by the repayment rate. Employers deduct it through PAYE alongside income tax and National Insurance.

Things this calculator does not include
- Interest on the balance and the write-off date.
- Self Assessment repayments on non-PAYE income.
- Pay-period effects: if your monthly pay varies, a high month can trigger a deduction even when your yearly pay is under the threshold.

Frequently asked questions
How much student loan will I repay on my salary?
You repay 9% of income above your plan's threshold (6% for a Postgraduate Loan). On £35,000 with a Plan 2 loan that is 9% of £5,615, or about £505 a year (£42 a month).
What are the student loan thresholds for 2026/27?
Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000 and Postgraduate Loan £21,000 a year.
Can I have two student loans at once?
You can have one undergraduate plan and a Postgraduate Loan. Both are deducted, each from its own threshold. If you have two undergraduate plans, you repay against the lowest threshold.
Should I overpay my student loan?
Often not. Plan 2 and Plan 5 balances are written off after 30 and 40 years, and many people never repay in full. Overpaying only helps if you expect to clear the loan before the write-off.
