How we worked this out
- Adding VAT: price × (1 + rate). At 20%, multiply by 1.2.
- Removing VAT: price ÷ (1 + rate). At 20%, divide by 1.2.
- The VAT itself is the difference between the two.

The VAT maths
- Add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate). At 20%, multiply by 1.2.
- Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). At 20%, divide by 1.2.
- VAT in a VAT-inclusive price: gross × rate ÷ (1 + rate). At 20% that is one sixth of the gross price.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add 20% VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1.2. For example £100 + VAT is £120.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1.2 for 20% VAT. £120 including VAT is £100 net, so the VAT is £20. Do not take 20% off the gross price, which gives the wrong answer.
What are the UK VAT rates?
Standard rate 20% for most goods and services, reduced rate 5% for things like home energy and children's car seats, and 0% for most food and children's clothes.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, or you expect it to in the next 30 days.
